On Track Newsletter
October 2017 VOL. 1 No 7

Welcome to the October 2017 issue of Altium’s On Track Newsletter. This month we celebrate a few unique engineers and designers from our global user community. The first is Omer Mahgoub from South Africa who is designing boards for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). The SKA will be the world’s largest radio telescope ever built, spanning two continents and providing unprecedented views of space.

Next, you’ll read about a group of passionate engineering students at the University of Waterloo in Canada. This team is busy creating a passenger class solar car to compete on the world stage in 2018.

This month’s On Track video kicks off a 3-part series on Thermal Management with Chris Carlson.

Finally, we pass on some great content to read and share, and give you a list of upcoming electronics events.

Your feedback for On Track is always welcome at judy.warner@altium.com.

Enjoy and always stay On Track!

Warm regards,
Judy M. Warner

Highlighting Exceptional PCB Designers from Around the Globe

As a result of our call for presenters for AltiumLive 2017: ANNUAL PCB DESIGN SUMMIT, we became acquainted with several PCB designers doing inspiring work from around the world. One such designer is Omer Mahgoub from Square Kilometer Array (SKA) Africa who is designing PCBs that will help give the world an unprecedented view of space. Read the interview I had with Omer, and take a peek into the world of radio astronomy.

Makers, Innovators and Their Cool Stuff

Recently, my colleague Chris Potts and I had the pleasure to have a video conference with three members of the University of Waterloo Midnight Sun solar car team. Now entering the 2017-2018 season, the team is in the midst of building the 12th car in the program’s history. Unlike previous years, however, they are building a “consumer practical” vehicle designed with 4 wheels, a cabin and 2 doors to carry two passengers (see the concept graphic above). Read more about the future of Midnight Sun and the team who has set their sights on competing on the world stage in 2018.

3Thermal Management (Part 1 of 3)

This month in the On Track video series, Senior FAE Chris Carlson begins a new 3-part series on Thermal Management. Here, in part 1, he will discuss the base concept of Thermal Resistance.
